Church of Agios Georgios

Church of Agios Georgios

Εικ 1 Βυζαντινός Ναός Αγίου ΓεωργίουSystematic research (conservation-restoration) was carried out in the church by the 2nd EBA. From the careful examination of the visible surfaces of some stone structures and from other elements that were correlated by the writers at the stage of imprinting, it was found that the small church is a reconstruction of a Roman bath. The finding was confirmed by the excavations that followed. The monument illuminates the era of late antiquity in Naxos and unites with a wonderful continuity the ancient and the Byzantine world. The inscription on the built-in entablature was placed in 1896 by Michael I. Markopoli. It was then published in the Syntagma of the inscriptions of Naxos (1903) by a print of Michael Crispy.

In fact, the church was built on the Roman baths of the time and the researches of the archaeologists revealed both very important frescoes of the Byzantine period and frescoes of the Roman period of Naxos. It was built (in terms of baths) around the 3rd or 4th century AD. while the church is probably of the 12th century.
